Mufsidaat of Fasting

Q. What is meant by mufsidaat?

A. Mufsidaat are the factors which break the fast. There are two types: one that makes qadaa necessary, and one that necessitates both qadaa and kaffaarah.

Q. What are the mufsidaat which make qadaa waajib?

A. Examples include:

  • Forcing something into a fasting person’s mouth and it goes down
  • Unintentionally swallowing water while gargling
  • Vomiting and intentionally returning it down the throat
  • Intentionally swallowing pebble, seed, mud, paper
  • Swallowing food stuck in teeth by pushing it with the tongue
  • Putting oil in the ear or snuff in nostrils
  • Swallowing blood in large quantity
  • Eating unintentionally, then thinking fast is broken and eating/drinking more
  • Taking sehri after subh saadiq
  • Knowingly breaking fast outside Ramadaan
  • Breaking fast before sunset thinking it is sunset

Q. In what conditions are both qadaa and kaffaarah waajib?

A. During Ramadaan:

  • Eating or drinking intentionally for food, medicine, or pleasure
  • Having sexual intercourse intentionally
  • Putting antimony into eyes or vein puncture then intentionally eating, thinking fast is broken

Q. If one’s Ramadaan fast is broken, is it right to eat and drink?

A. No, one must wait until evening, just like travelers, minors who become major, women who finish menstruation, and insane persons who regain sanity.

Q. Is kaffaarah necessary for breaking any fast other than Ramadaan?

A. No, it is only waajib for breaking fard Ramadaan fast. Kaffaarah is not required for other fasts or their qadaa.
